Trona Bennett studied medicine at The University of the West Indies (UWI). She graduated from UWI’s Faculty of Medical Sciences in 1973, earning honours in Obstetrics & Gynaecology.
In 1988 she relocated to Saint Lucia, where she became one of the island’s best-known obstetrician-gynaecologists. A UWI memorial note credits her with helping to start Tapion Hospital and describes her as a trailblazer in laparoscopy, building a substantial practice and urging peers toward excellence. The Saint Lucia Medical & Dental Association (SLMDA) likewise remembered her as an active member for two decades, widely respected, frank, full of life, and a consistent patient advocate.
Colleagues and patients regarded Dr. Bennett as a leading clinician in Saint Lucia’s OB/GYN community. Contemporary tributes and local press coverage repeatedly noted her skill, dedication, and pioneering subspecialty work—especially minimally invasive approaches—at a time when such techniques were still gaining ground in the Eastern Caribbean.
UWI’s memorial described her as a devout mother and hard worker who was passionate about her patients. She was married to Dr Kenneth Andrew Richardson
Dr. Bennett died on 13 January 2009 at her home in Trouya, Gros Islet, Saint Lucia.
Beyond the tragedy, Dr. Bennett is remembered in Saint Lucia’s medical community as a pioneer of laparoscopy, a foundational figure in private-sector hospital care associated with Tapion Hospital, and a steadfast advocate for women’s health. Alumni and professional tributes emphasize her commitment, high standards, and impact on colleagues and patients across the region.
