Dr. Leonard Surage, MBBS, FRCS (ENT), is a founding member of Tapion Hospital and a key figure in its establishment and early development. From inception, he played a central role in bringing together shareholders and securing critical investment, helping to lay the financial and structural foundation necessary for the hospital’s launch in 1996.
In addition to his leadership in shaping the institution, Dr. Surage was among Tapion’s first Emergency Room physicians, providing essential frontline care during the hospital’s formative years. His hands-on clinical involvement, combined with his strategic contributions, reflects a deep and enduring commitment to the hospital’s mission and growth.
A distinguished otolaryngologist, Dr. Surage trained at the University of the West Indies and later in the United Kingdom, earning his Fellowship in ENT surgery. He returned to Saint Lucia to establish and advance ENT services, introducing critical surgical capabilities and improving access to specialized care. Notably, he invested his own resources to acquire essential surgical equipment, enabling advanced procedures that were previously unavailable locally.
Dr. Surage’s impact extends well beyond Tapion Hospital. Early in his career, he served as District Medical Officer in the South of Saint Lucia, where he strengthened primary healthcare services across multiple communities. He co-established community health initiatives, including Alcoholics Anonymous centres and cancer screening programmes, and led extensive public education efforts on chronic diseases and public health issues. His commitment to equitable care was further demonstrated through years of voluntary ENT clinics and emergency support at St. Jude’s Hospital.
A respected leader in healthcare governance, Dr. Surage has served in numerous national and regional roles, including President of the Saint Lucia Medical and Dental Association, Board Member of the Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Education in Medicine, and Chairman of the Caribbean Association of Medical Councils. At Tapion Hospital, he has held key leadership positions including Medical Director, Chairman, and Board Member, and continues to contribute actively to the hospital’s ongoing development and strategic direction.
His contributions to medicine and national development have been widely recognized, including the Saint Lucia Medal of Merit and the award of Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2021.
Dr. Surage’s career reflects a rare combination of clinical excellence, visionary leadership, and resolute service—qualities that have been instrumental in shaping both Tapion Hospital and the broader healthcare landscape of Saint Lucia.
