Dr. Martin Didier (Deceased)

Dr. Martin Didier (December 1953 – July 2024) was a founding member of Tapion Hospital and a central figure in its creation, growth, and enduring success. As part of the visionary team that established the hospital in 1996, he demonstrated exceptional perseverance and leadership, helping to transform a bold concept into one of Saint Lucia’s leading healthcare institutions.

A specialist in Internal Medicine and cardiovascular diseases, Dr. Didier played a pivotal role in advancing clinical services at Tapion. He pioneered and led the development of the island’s only private dialysis unit, expanding access to life-sustaining care for both local patients and international visitors.

His commitment to innovation and collaboration also facilitated critical partnerships with regional specialists, improving access to advanced diagnostic and specialist services and elevating the standard of care available at the hospital.

Through his service as Medical Director and Board member, Dr. Didier helped guide Tapion’s clinical and strategic direction, ensuring the hospital remained grounded in its founding principles of excellence, integration, and patient-centered care.

A dedicated mentor, he was instrumental in developing the next generation of medical specialists, leaving a lasting impact on the hospital’s clinical capacity and continuity of care. Dr. Owen King (Deceased)

Dr. Owen King was a quiet, gentle giant in healthcare whose legacy is inseparable from the foundation and ethos of Tapion Hospital.

As a founding member and the first Medical Director, he played a central role in transforming the vision of a private hospital into reality. His leadership in the early years was instrumental in securing investor confidence, mobilizing critical support, and establishing the governance and values that continue to guide the institution today. His presence and reputation lent immediate credibility to the fledgling institution, and his quiet authority helped validate the inception of the Tapion Hospital brand.

A gifted and highly respected surgeon, Dr. King was known for his ability to perform a wide range of complex procedures across multiple disciplines, often under challenging conditions. His clinical excellence was matched by a deep sense of compassion, humility, and an unwavering commitment to patient care. He believed that true surgical skill lay not only in technical ability, but in judgment, restraint, and respect for the patient.

Dr. Emsco Remy

Dr. Emsco Remy is a founding member and first Chairman of the Board of Tapion Hospital, whose leadership and vision were instrumental in bringing the institution to life in 1996. From inception, he played a pivotal role in mobilizing key stakeholders and securing the financial and technical partnerships necessary to establish the hospital, laying a strong foundation for its long-term success.

A distinguished ophthalmologist and the first Saint Lucian to specialize in the field, Dr. Remy has combined clinical excellence with strategic leadership throughout his career. As Chairman, he provided critical governance and direction during Tapion’s formative years, helping to shape its standards, structure, and commitment to high-quality healthcare.

Beyond his institutional leadership, Dr. Remy has made a profound impact through his longstanding service to communities across Saint Lucia, particularly in the South. His outreach and dedication have expanded access to eye care and improved the quality of life for countless individuals, reflecting a deep commitment to equitable healthcare and community well-being.

In addition to his contributions to Tapion, he is the Founder and CEO of the St. Lucia Eye Centre, a past President of the Saint Lucia Medical and Dental Association, and has served as Acting Governor General. In recognition of his national service, he was awarded the Saint Lucia Cross in 2018.

Dr. Jacqueline Bird

Dr. Jacqueline Bird, MBBS, DCH, DM (Paediatrics), is a founding member of Tapion Hospital and its second Medical Director-succeeding Dr Owen King. A pioneer in the development of its paediatric services, since the hospital’s inception, she has played a central role in establishing and growing a strong, patient-centered paediatric practice, contributing significantly to Tapion’s reputation for comprehensive family and child healthcare.

A highly respected pediatrician, Dr. Bird has combined decades of clinical expertise with a deep commitment to child health and advocacy. Her work at Tapion has been instrumental in shaping the delivery of paediatric care, ensuring high standards in both clinical practice and the overall patient experience for children and their families.

In addition to her contributions at Tapion, Dr. Bird has held key leadership roles in Saint Lucia’s public health system, including Consultant Paediatrician at Victoria Hospital and leadership of the national Community Child Health Service. She is also a founding director of RISE (St. Lucia) Inc., an organization dedicated to youth development, and served as the first President of the Caribbean College of Paediatricians. Dr. Bird’s enduring commitment to Tapion Hospital reflects her passion for advancing paediatric care and her dedication to improving the health and well-being of children across Saint Lucia.

Dr. E. Marie Granderson Didier

Dr. Marie Grandison-Didier is an intrepid founding physician of Tapion Hospital and a steadfast contributor to its growth and development since its inception in 1996. As one of the early medical professionals who embraced the Tapion vision—at a time when establishing a private hospital in Saint Lucia required courage, sacrifice, and belief—she played an integral role in bringing that vision to life and shaping its patient-centered philosophy.

A specialist in dermatology, Dr. Grandison-Didier has combined clinical excellence with a deep commitment to holistic, accessible care. As a foundation tenant doctor, she has remained actively engaged in the hospital’s evolution, contributing through both her clinical practice and her service on the Board and key committees. Her influence has helped reinforce Tapion’s commitment to high-quality care grounded in compassion, reflected in her consistent Ethos of nurturing “warm, inviting spaces” and a patient-first experience.

Her contributions extend beyond Tapion into national healthcare development. Upon returning to Saint Lucia in 1994 with a Distinction in Dermatological Sciences from the University of Cardiff, she became the island’s sole government dermatologist, simultaneously leading Dermatology and STI services. She pioneered expanded access to these services, strengthening clinics that served the entire population, and was the first non-French national to provide care in the local STI Clinic. Her work also extended into leprosy and general dermatology services, significantly broadening the scope and reach of care available in Saint Lucia.

Dr. Grandison-Didier continued to advance public health through leadership roles, including serving as Director of the National HIV Programme (2004–2007), where she contributed to strengthening national response systems. A lifelong advocate for education, she has consistently shared her expertise across the island, supporting both medical professionals and the wider community. Her contributions to public service were recognized in 2011 when she was awarded Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE).

At Tapion Hospital, she has been instrumental in supporting the integration of specialized services, mentoring colleagues, and promoting continuous improvement in clinical standards. Dr. Leonard Surage

Dr. Leonard Surage, MBBS, FRCS (ENT), is a founding member of Tapion Hospital and a key figure in its establishment and early development. From inception, he played a central role in bringing together shareholders and securing critical investment, helping to lay the financial and structural foundation necessary for the hospital’s launch in 1996.

In addition to his leadership in shaping the institution, Dr. Surage was among Tapion’s first Emergency Room physicians, providing essential frontline care during the hospital’s formative years. His hands-on clinical involvement, combined with his strategic contributions, reflects a deep and enduring commitment to the hospital’s mission and growth.

A distinguished otolaryngologist, Dr. Surage trained at the University of the West Indies and later in the United Kingdom, earning his Fellowship in ENT surgery. He returned to Saint Lucia to establish and advance ENT services, introducing critical surgical capabilities and improving access to specialized care. Notably, he invested his own resources to acquire essential surgical equipment, enabling advanced procedures that were previously unavailable locally.

Dr. Surage’s impact extends well beyond Tapion Hospital. Early in his career, he served as District Medical Officer in the South of Saint Lucia, where he strengthened primary healthcare services across multiple communities. He co-established community health initiatives, including Alcoholics Anonymous centres and cancer screening programmes, and led extensive public education efforts on chronic diseases and public health issues. His commitment to equitable care was further demonstrated through years of voluntary ENT clinics and emergency support at St. Jude’s Hospital.

A respected leader in healthcare governance, Dr. Surage has served in numerous national and regional roles, including President of the Saint Lucia Medical and Dental Association, Board Member of the Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Education in Medicine, and Chairman of the Caribbean Association of Medical Councils. At Tapion Hospital, he has held key leadership positions including Medical Director, Chairman, and Board Member, and continues to contribute actively to the hospital’s ongoing development and strategic direction.

His contributions to medicine and national development have been widely recognized, including the Saint Lucia Medal of Merit and the award of Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2021.

Dr. Surage’s career reflects a rare combination of clinical excellence, visionary leadership, and resolute service—qualities that have been instrumental in shaping both Tapion Hospital and the broader healthcare landscape of Saint Lucia.

Dr. Leslie Anne Bishop

Dr. Leslie Anne Bishop, MBBS, MRCOG, FRCOG, is a founding member of Tapion Hospital and a key contributor to the development and growth of its Obstetrics and Gynaecology services. With over four decades in clinical medicine, including 35 years in O&G, she has played a pivotal role in establishing and advancing high-quality women’s health services at the hospital.

From its early years, Dr. Bishop was instrumental in shaping Tapion’s O&G practice, ensuring that comprehensive, patient-centered care was accessible to women in Saint Lucia and the wider region. Her clinical leadership and commitment to excellence helped build a strong, trusted service that became a cornerstone of the hospital’s offerings.

Trained at the University of the West Indies and the United Kingdom, where she earned her MRCOG , Dr. Bishop elevated standards of care and contributing to the hospital’s reputation for quality and professionalism. She later achieved Fellowship of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and a postgraduate Diploma in Public Health.

In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Bishop has contributed to the wider medical community through leadership roles, including serving as President of the Saint Lucia Medical and Dental Association, where she advocated for sexual and reproductive health. Dr. Bishop remains eternally grateful to those persons who made her participation in this amazing project a possibility.

Ms. Debra Spencer

Debra Spencer, RPh, journey with Tapion Hospital began in 1997. A highly experienced licensed pharmacist with more than 35 years of dedicated service in both community and hospital settings. She began her career in community pharmacy in 1990, where she spent six years building a strong foundation in medication dispensing, patient counseling, and chronic disease management.

For nearly three decades at Tapion Hospital, Ms. Spencer has been instrumental in shaping and advancing the institution’s pharmacy practice. As a hospital pharmacist, she has worked closely with physicians, nurses, and multidisciplinary teams to optimize medication therapy and improve patient outcomes. Her contributions have included strengthening medication safety protocols, reducing the risk of adverse drug events, and promoting the rational use of medicines across clinical departments.

Ms. Spencer has also played a key role in enhancing pharmacy operations at Tapion, supporting the development of efficient dispensing systems, mentoring junior staff, and reinforcing best practices in patient-centered pharmaceutical care. Her commitment to accuracy, safety, and continuous improvement has helped elevate the standard of pharmacy services within the hospital.

Respected for her clinical expertise, professionalism, and unwavering dedication, Ms. Spencer remains a vital contributor to Tapion Hospital’s mission of delivering safe, effective, and high-quality healthcare.

Sister Francisca Dickson

Guided by the principle of service above self, Sister Dixon devoted her life to nursing, driven by a deep commitment to patient care and community well-being. She began her career at Victoria Hospital, where she gained broad clinical experience across general wards, midwifery, and the operating theatre.

In 1996, following her retirement from the Government of Saint Lucia, she joined Tapion Hospital, marking the start of a transformative three-decade tenure. Embracing a more technologically advanced environment, she enhanced both her efficiency and standard of care.

At Tapion, Sister Dixon combined clinical excellence with strong leadership. She first served as Operating Room Manager before being appointed Nursing Director (1998–2022). In this role, she was instrumental in the hospital’s accreditation and led efforts to strengthen systems and procedures under her guiding philosophy: “Excellence—Procedure Protects People.”

After retiring in 2022, she continued to serve as a Consultant, focusing on leadership development, mentoring, and institutional strengthening. Throughout Tapion Hospital’s journey Sister Dixon has remained loyal helping to guide the organization through difficult financial and clinical times, including the  COVID Pandemic. Her work helped shape the procedural frameworks that guide the hospital today.

Sister Dixon takes great pride in Tapion Hospital’s growth, including the expansion of oncology, cardiology, and nephrology services. Now fully retired, she remains a dedicated advocate, supporting the hospital’s continued pursuit of excellence in healthcare.
